Project Management and Scheduling using ProjectLibre

Software Engineering and Project Management Coursework
ProjectLibre Project Management

Project Overview

In this practical software management project, I leveraged ProjectLibre—an open-source project management tool—to plan, schedule, and optimize complex tasks and resources for two distinct scenarios: organizing a departmental social event and managing a quality improvement initiative for Logistics International Ltd. The project focused on understanding and applying project management principles through hands-on use of advanced scheduling features, critical path analysis, resource management, and feasibility assessment.

Objectives

  • Develop practical proficiency with ProjectLibre to effectively manage real-world projects
  • Plan, schedule, and track complex project activities, dependencies, milestones, and resources
  • Implement detailed resource allocation and leveling to ensure balanced workloads and realistic schedules
  • Analyze critical paths, optimize schedules, and enhance decision-making through software-assisted visualization
  • Clearly communicate project timelines, dependencies, and resource assignments using professional project management standards

Methodology

Scenario 1: Department Social Event

  • Created a detailed activity breakdown structure for tasks including venue booking, advertising, ticket sales, and final event coordination
  • Defined clear dependencies (finish-start relationships) between tasks, ensuring logical sequencing and realistic timelines
  • Implemented sub-task management, resource assignments, and milestone scheduling
  • Optimized project scheduling by defining constraints, deadlines, and logical task lags

Scenario 2: Logistics International Quality Improvement Project

  • Developed a comprehensive project schedule based on detailed case study data
  • Used ProjectLibre to conduct detailed resource loading analysis
  • Applied resource-leveling strategies to identify and mitigate resource overloads
  • Evaluated the project's critical path to determine optimal resource allocation

Key Features and Practical Insights

  • Utilized ProjectLibre to effectively model and visualize complex task dependencies
  • Conducted detailed resource management and allocation
  • Leveraged interactive features for dynamic schedule adjustments
  • Produced detailed Gantt charts, WBS, and resource histograms

Results and Outcomes

  • Successfully scheduled and optimized both projects with realistic timelines
  • Enhanced resource efficiency through practical resource leveling strategies
  • Developed comprehensive scheduling documentation for clear communication
